Seat Assign Tool

Main content start

This tool allows you to download a list of seats for the fixed seating rooms that are most requested for exams so that you may assign students to seats. These lists can be shown at a variety of spacings and are accompanied by a schematic map of the seats. Preview features of the Seat Assign Tool or simply click a room below (see  "Request header is too large" errors if you encounter that error below).

Releases and Known Issues

Release 0.8 (9/28/26)

Goal: Create downloadable seat lists for 40 fixed seating rooms used most often for midterms in order to replace seat lists that have been informally maintained by instructors. Seat lists can be generated at various spacings (e.g. every other, every third seat). The accompanying schematic map visually represents the seat list at various spacing and can be projected for arriving students to help them find their assigned seat.

Release 1.0 (future)

Goal: Ensure all text above schematic map wraps if user zooms in or has smaller screen. Allow users to see larger schematic maps by scrolling horizontally rather than zooming out. Create a separate projectable version of the seat schematic that eliminates extraneous text, enlarges navigation text, and shrinks seats until the entire room is visible.

Release 2.0 (future)

Goal: Allow instructors to opt out of using certain seats for various reasons, including aligning students behind each other, or changing the ratio of right- and left-handed desks.

Release 3.0 (future)

Goal: A series of releases to allow instructors to randomly and manually assign students to certain seats in certain rooms, along with related functionality.
